As every parent knows, encouraging a child to start an activity or join in with a game can be a challenge, so in the summer of 2021 we trialed our Ranger program during the school holidays, designed to encourage participation and engagement. The children could join in at our Science Table, Art Corner, Outdoors & Nature, Cookery and Super Me! (our Mental Health activities) if they chose to, and when they tried their best at an activity they earned a star. When they got five stars for a topic, they were awarded a certificate and a prize, and if they got all five certificates, we had their name engraved on a trophy which was given to them in their school assemblies. We gave out 54 trophies!

The trophies were a real tribute to what we saw in Club - more genuinely engaged children, participating fully and enjoying their day. The thank you emails we got from parents was testament to the pride the children felt about their accomplishments, as were their requests to keep the program going.

We've listened, it's back for 2022, stronger, simpler but just as much fun!

Our Activities are a Key Part of What we Do - we spend a lot of time planning activities that will engage the children, give them something new to be inspired by or bring familiar favourites. We spend time getting to know each child so that we can make sure there is always something they can enjoy doing while they are with us. If there is something you'd like your team to know about what your child would like, do please talk to them - we are alway keen to work with parents.

In fact, our Activities are so important that a few years ago we did something radical - we we decided to scrap our advertising budget and use it on external activity providers for the children- we’ve since had yoga and dance in After School Club, we’ve hatched our own ducklings and chicks, we've had an incredible array of activities in Holiday Club- from archery to meeting llamas! We have team members who exclusively work on planning activities, as a result of which we’ve had fantastic activity packages and run Crest, the British Science Association’s STEM scheme.

This actually won us a national prize! They said “The innovation aspect that the judges saw was related to activities. Having dedicated more time developing activities and also bringing other providers and professionals to present new challenges and opportunities to kids was what was considered the most innovative.”

Why?   They said “The innovation aspect that the judges saw was related to activities. Having dedicated more time developing activities and also bringing other providers and professionals to present new challenges and opportunities to kids was what was considered the most innovative.”

What is it we’ve actually done?
